Our Brand Heritage
Arthur Brooke opened his first shop in Manchester, putting customers first with an array of high quality, tasty teas.
PG tips was born, first being called ‘Pre-Gest-Tea’, which was then abbreviated. Mr Brooke then added ‘tips’ to highlight that we only use the top two leaves and bud of each plant.
In 1956, we broadcast our first TV ad. It was in glorious black-and-white, obviously!
In a move that stunned the nation, PG tips introduced our first tea bag. Fortunately, they were a hit and, before long, bags outsold loose-leaf tea.
By the 1980’s, 50% of tea lovers were making tea in a mug, rather than using a pot.

We always try to respond to what our fans love, which is why we came up with the stringed tea bag just for mugs!
PG tips launches the revolutionary pyramid® bag. The unique shape acts like a miniature teapot, giving the leaves more room to move.
Prefer a decaf? Or perhaps dairy-free? PG tips wanted to give all our fans a great tea to enjoy with our delicious new blends.
